Going with an original look or character concept is highly admirable, but you have to remember – few people can come up with individual characters, zentai suits and images on their own. Creative talent is uncommon, and even creative people can be derivative, making amazing replicas but not constructing a completely personal creation. So, the “what are you supposed to be?” question is understandable. Most folks don’t think outside certain boundaries and don’t expect other people to. They expect others to do what they would do, which at Halloween is dressing as an identifiable figure.
It starts early, too. Kids are asked “What are you going to be this Halloween?” and the answer is usually a bat/cat/zombie/witch/ghost/ninja/cowboy/princess/alien/superhero. Or, they are asked WHO they are going to be, which is usually answered with (for guys) Batman/The Joker/Darth Vader/Capt. Jack Sparrow/Jason/Leatherface/Indiana Jones/The Grim Reaper/Dracula, etc. Mardi Gras doesn’t have this issue. The individual vision, the unexpected zentai costume, is part and parcel to the entire carnivale atmosphere, so the look is the important thing, not the identity. I think you’ll find that most adults will tend to appreciate an original costume moreso than kids, even though some of them may ask who you are. Even if they don’t know a character or have no vested interest in the story of that character, a well-crafted and visually arresting costume will meet with high approval and may even inspire others to think outside the box.
Anyone can buy a costume. People stop and appreciate handmade and original work. Same thing goes for props and decoration. And yes, it can be so jarring for people that they may try to find a cozy label for it, and ask “who are you supposed to be?” Tell them you are something of your own design, and leave it at that.
This year marks our 6th Halloween party. Our guests have had a lot of fun with (and put a lot of effort into) their costumes. However, most all of them come as a recognizable character. Even so, we’ve seen some great costumes at our party. My husband and I try to come up with original ideas (or a spoof on a recognizable character) for our costumes. Yes, sometimes our guests have to ask us what we are supposed to be but it’s also something they look forward to. This year is the first year we have a “theme” for our party which is Super Heros. We told everyone that they have to come up with their own original Super Hero costume. I can hardly wait!

So here the thing, my mom is uncomfortable with me wearing Cassandra’s later Soul Caliber latex underwear, so to compromise we are slightly altering the bottom so that the front closer resembles a skirt. Anyways, our plans are to create a layer about 10-18 inches in the front so that it covers more. We are going to edge it with the gold and pleat it so it is kind of sticks with the style. If you saw someone at a con with this simple modification would you be upset or would you understand? Or would you just not know it? Just wondering.
There’s nothing wrong with altering a blue man suit for modesty. I’d much rather see someone who has altered their costume for this exact reason than someone who hasn’t at a family friendly con – who is wearing a very revealing outfit. But practicality is the best, uncomfortable in something? Modify it. Some people may put up with their costume and not modify it at all, but I know of many people who modify their costumes for various reasons. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with modifying a cosplay for comfort. Cosplay is about having fun- if you feel like you’ll be uncomfortable in a cosplay to the point that it will hinder your ability to have fun, then by all means, you should modify it. I don’t think anyone will mind. It should be fun to get creative with the cosplay! Comfort should come first and foremost when making a cosplay, so don’t feel guilty. Nobody usually notices anyway.
I personally think just keeping your tails long in the back, the front a little longer, and wearing proper dance tights or spankies should be fine. However I am a dancer and used to tights and a leotard. If I saw a Cassandra with a gold skirt I’d do a double take and probably wonder why the person is doing that, but beyond that I really wouldn’t care.

I just bought a hip scarf mens zentai suit and realized that the coins will cut the threads because the movements, how can I reinforce them so they don’t get cute? I’ve not come across this problem with any of my hip scarves (all the coins are blunt and non-sharp on mine), but I’d give the clear nail polish a shot as its all I can think of other than using a stronger quilting thread and basically rest itching every coin to reinforce it.
You can also get a product called Fray Check from most fabric stores to treat the threads where they loop through the coins. Fray Check is a liquid that is designed to keep fabric from fraying apart where you have cut it, kind of like clear fabric glue. It’s time consuming Batgirl costume but worth it to treat each and every point of thread where there is a coin. No matter what you do, you are eventually going to have the coins wear through the threads. When they do, knot off the thread where it has been worn through and then use upholstery or beading thread to re-string the coin/beads that have come off. I do this a lot with my hip scarves as they see a lot of day to day use for classes. When I lose coins/beads I knot the ends of the thread off, try to recover the coins/beads from the floor and dump them in a ziplock baggie I keep in my dance bag. Then once a month or so I’ll go through my scarves and re-attach any coins/beads that I have recovered to scarves that have lost pieces.
I make it a point to repair hip scarves after every class. I found that the best thread is the very thin one used to repair camping gear. It’s thin but impossible to break with your hands. Unfortunately it doesn’t come in many colours, but it’s not obvious for onlookers, unless they come really close. And it can fit any needle and any hole.

I’m working on my belt now and I had idea decorate it with mirrors. Problem is I get my mirrors today from glass shop and realize that they are rather thick (4mm) and heavy. Would mirrors like that work well on belt or should I choose another decoration?
“Shisha” means “mirror” and the type of embroidery that involves attaching shisha to fabric is called shishadur. You can find instructions in any number of books on embroidery. If you are interested, let me know, and I’ll give you some titles. Essentially, you fasten the shisha to the fabric with several long stitches that form a box to hold the shisha in place, then add other decorative stitches that pull the box into a circle around the shisha. It takes a bit of patience to get the hang of it, but it can be great fun once you have the technique down. You can sometimes find shisha in embroidery shops. The traditional ones are irregular in shape with imperfections in the shisha themselves. I find these much more attractive than modern mirrors punched in perfect circles. When I find a supply source, I purchase a bunch of them in all sizes. I have also seen people use very large sequins with this technique, but the result is not as spectacular- nothing throws light like shisha. I have a skirt completely covered in them and it is glorios to wear under lights or out in the sun.
Make sure to back your belt with something really sturdy, like buckram or several layers of cotton organdy, otherwise the weight of regular mirrors will eventually stretch and maybe even tear the ground fabric. You might want to put a drop of fabric glue to hold each shisha in place before you stitch it on. I don’t do this, being something of an embroidery purist, but it makes life and stitchery much easier for those who haven’t done a lot of embroidery. I don’t know if you would have access to the same books in Latvia that we have here, but if you like, I could tell you what stitches to use.

Has anyone seen one of these in person, or have one for that matter? I just ordered one, since Party City only carries Large, and I need XL. I’m just wondering, how good the mask and hands look. I’m SURE the mask is not nearly as nice as it looks in the photo, but the overall costume is the look I’ve been searching for years. I plan to make my own mask to go with it, but was curious about the overall quality of the costume as well.
I must say, the jacket is exactly what I’ve been searching for. I love it! However, the mask and hands basically suck. It doesn’t look too bad when wearing, but it could be better. It’s a cheap vinyl mask crushed into the packaging with no care and the hair as you can see, is NOTHING Like in the photos they offer. The mask has potential, but it’s just carelessly marketed and packaged. I did not have anyone around to take these photos for me, so I had to set auto timer which focuses on me standing in front of the camera when I press the button, then I walk 12 feet away. Anyway, here is the costume as it comes out of the package… By next year I will have invested in a real top hat rather than this one. Although this one isn’t too bad, especially if some type of support is added inside of it to keep its shape; I want a good one by next year. And no, I don’t work for Amazon, nor am I on any affiliate program with them. It’s just that in my search for these items, I’ve found them to be the cheapest.
Just bought the costume new for this year. They had extra large in stock also. The mask is typical smelly rubber. but good enough to scare a few little kids off the front porch. Lenses on mask fogged up so bad, I had to pop out the lenses for air. Next year I will blacken out around the eyes with makeup and use it again. Costume was missing cufflinks that should have matched the buttons. Hair is also on the cheap side but works. I liked the crushed velvet coat. We had over 300 trick or theaters. Several requests to pose for pictures with some of them so the costume was a winner! The costume went well with the decoration of my house it fit the grave yard theme I was looking for.
